RI Fitness Events To Benefit Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. and there are a number of fitness events being held in Rhode Island to help support the cause.

  • Sunday, October 9: 3rd Annual Gloria Gemma 5K Run/Walk - 11:15am at 100 Gaspee Street, Providence, RI (in front of the Providence Place Mall). This race benefits the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, which aims to educate and support the men, women and families that are affected with a diagnosis of breast cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to provide awareness, education and to generate funding for critical breast health programs in the local community. Race Fee: $30 for adults and $15 for kids until 10/1/11. On-site registration will be $35 for adults and $20 for kids. If you want your dog to walk with you, the fee is currently $10.
  • Saturday, October 15: Pink Event Day at Studio Exhale – 8:00am – Basic Yoga; 9:30am – Vinyasa Yoga; 11:00am – Outdoor Zumba Marathon (75 min. class). Studio Exhale is located at 1263 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston, RI. All proceeds will be donated to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Pinkberry and Del’s will be there with treats! Cost: $15 donation per class.
  • Tuesday, October 18: “Pilates for Pink” Pilates Class – 9:00am at EVOLUTION Pilates & Nutrition, 685 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI. EVOLUTION and Total Fitness have partnered up to offer this Pilates Mat Sculpt class to support breast cancer research. They will donate 100% of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Class is open to the public. Suggested Donation: $10.
  • Thursday, October 20: “Pilates for Pink” Pilates Class – 10:00am at EVOLUTION Pilates & Nutrition, 685 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI. EVOLUTION and Total Fitness have partnered up to offer this Pilates Mat Sculpt class to support breast cancer research. They will donate 100% of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Class is open to the public. Suggested Donation: $10.
  • Saturday, October 22: Multiple “Pilates for Pink” Pilates Classes – EVOLUTION Pilates & Nutrition and Total Fitness have partnered up to offer these Pilates classeses to support breast cancer research. They will donate 100% of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Classes are open to the public. Schedule: 9:30am – Pilates Mat Class at Bristol Total Fitness, 685 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI; 10:00am – Pilates Mat Flow at EVOLUTION, 685 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI; 10:00am – Pilates Mat Class at Dartmouth Total Fitness, 360 Faunce Corner Road, North Dartmouth, MA; 10:15am – Pilates Mat Class at Seekonk Total Fitness, 1301 Fall River Avenue, Seekonk, MA. Suggested Donation: $10.
  • Monday, October 24: STRIDE For HOPE – 7:30pm – Mind Body Barre class; 8:30pm – STRIDE (Shaun T’s Real Intense Dance Exercise) class. These back-to-back classes (attend one or both!) will take place at Mind Body Barre, 227 Plain Street, Suite 300, Rehoboth, MA. Class credits do not apply. Cash or check only; 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
  • Saturday, October 29: The Amazing Grace Breast Cancer Fundraiser – choose a 30-minute time slot between 9:00am and 12:30pm at Alpha Fitness-CrossFitRhody, 461 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI. This fundraiser for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation will consist of three different workouts based on your fitness level: Grace, Kettlebells or Burpees. The goal of the Amazing Grace workout is to raise awareness the roles that exercise and nutrition play in the prevention, treatment and recovery of cancer. For more info contact Ronni McCartney. Cost: $35 tax-deductible donation.
  • Sunday, October 30: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 3.2-Mile Walk – 8:30am at Temple to Music, Roger Williams Park, 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI. Fundraising support from this walk enables the American Cancer Society to educate and empower women to live healthy lives and reduce their risk for breast cancer, and to get screening tests such as mammograms to find breast cancer early, when it is easiest to treat; provide information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to people facing breast cancer in order to guide them through every step of their breast cancer experience; find cures by investing in and conducting research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries into breast cancer’s causes and cures; and fight back by working with legislators to support laws that help fight breast cancer and help all women get access to screenings and care. There is no registration fee, but participants are encouraged to fundraise.
